The Photography of Steve Diet Goedde

Steve Diet Goedde started taking fetish photographs in 1991 in Chicago. In the years prior to 1991, he had interests in both photography and fetishism but had never combined the two. To him, erotic photography seemed too obvious of a road to take. So for years, he declined to pursue it. “Erotic photography is such an obvious genre for people who want to take photos,” says Goedde. “I knew that if I were to ever take erotic photographs, there would have to be an emphasis on the photography and not the subject matter. Most people who like eroticism in art only appreciate it for it’s titillating qualities and not the artistic aesthetics.”

One day, Goedde and his girlfriend at the time decided to take some photographs of her wearing some of her latex attire. Thinking that they were being risqué back then, he declined to photograph her face. He shot one roll of film (fifteen exposures) which ended up producing about five of Goedde’s most famous images to this day. This batch of photographs included his signature photograph of the latex clad hands. The photographs were so well received, that friends urged him to do more.

“I had a lot of friends in the Chicago SM scene, so it was no problem finding models.” By 1993, Goedde had his first feature in Skin Two Magazine, the bible of the fetish fashion scene. After that, he continued shooting his own brand of fetish imagery which in turn would get published in many other fetish publications such as Marquis, Secret, Ritual, and Taste of Latex.

While continuing to pursue his artistic vision, Goedde never pursued photography professionally. It was done strictly for the aesthetic fun of it. Up until 1998, Goedde continued to make a living working as a buyer for a Chicago record store. To him, this gave him the opportunity to take pictures on his own terms. He only took photos for himself and his models.

In 1997, the art world took notice of his work. He had two simultaneous features in two of the most revered photography magazines, Italy’s Zoom and Spain’s La Fotografia Actual for which he received the cover story.

Also in 1997, Goedde was contacted by the highly respected photography publisher Edition Stemmle of Switzerland. Within a year after the initial contact, they released Goedde’s first hardcover retrospective “The Beauty of Fetish.” Proving that fetish photography was now acceptable in the mainstream market, Vicki Goldberg, the photography critic for the New York Times, provided the introduction to Goedde’s book. In the eight months since its release, the book has received an overwhelming amount of critical acclaim and is breaking sales records in the USA and Europe.

In early 1998, before the book’s release, Goedde left his hometown of Chicago and headed out to Los Angeles where he currently works on his photography. He still refuses to pursue professional photography and insists on doing his fine art erotica on his own terms.

Recently, Goedde’s work has been shown in numerous galleries alongside other photographers as Walker Evans, Robert Frank, August Sander, Lewis Hine, and Jan Saudek.

In the course of reviewing the many models on the net, what is usually a frustrating experience of dealing with large egos suddenly became a rapturous experience when we met Anna Lieb. I first saw Sarah go-go dancing at a happy little club in Hollywood about a year and a half ago. She was wearing a cowgirl outfit complete with hat and toy gun. She did this super-cute dance that reminded me of a little girl spinning around and playing with a hoola-hoop. At first glimpse I didn’t suspect she was a gothic chick. Then I noticed the bat tattoo which, as she danced, seemed to circle its way around from the small of her back to her midriff. Although I should have, I didn’t talk to her that night. (I think I was kinda bummed because the last couple of girls I approached and ask if they’d be interested in modeling for me thought I was a sleazy, lesbian pornography. Some of which, is not true.) As fate would have it, I saw Sarah again a couple of months later in the gothic room of another club. Not dancing, but just chillin’ as some Danielle Dax song pumped throughout the room. I wasn’t positive it was the same girl, so I asked her if she had a bat on her back and she said “Yes”. She was really cool and said she’d love to take some pictures. I did two photo shoots with Sarah. We had a lot of fun and practically laughed non-stop the whole time. She moved earlier this year and I lost contact with her. All I really know about Sarah is that she’s Latina, she’s got cute little daughter and a couple of cool tats.

Dark Wench

I am 29-years-old, a proud mother of two children, and work by day in a corporate environment. I have been involved with the “goth” scene since about age 15 or so. Although I have “toned down” my style a bit over the years, my “gothic inclinations” are still quite evident, such as my tastes in music and wardrobe, and my views on life and society in general.

I am a self-taught seamstress and fashion designer who once created my own clothing line, but alas, it proved to more of an expensive hobby than a viable career option. These days, when I am not climbing the corporate ladder, or chasing around after my adorable kids (one son Nathan, and one daughter Rowan) I am expending my artistic energies into web design. I currently maintain “Gothic Mother of the Week”, and am in the process of developing other online projects. I also do a bit of modeling on the side, doing the occasional stint here and there.

As for “stats”, I am dark blonde by birth, but saucy redhead by choice. I measure in at a petite 5’3″, but will not divulge weight, as you just can’t please anybody with that one! Either you’re too thin, or you’re too big, so just don’t ask, I always say! I’m a fiery-signed Sagittarius, and yes, I’ll be 30 this year, but I look and feel better now than I did at 18!!!

The Photography of Craig Morey

Craig Morey was born and raised in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, in the Midwestern U.S. He attended Indiana University from 1970 thru 1974 and studied with the noted Bauhaus artist, Henry Holmes Smith.
He soon migrated to California and with a group of other young photographers founded San Francisco Camerawork, a gallery devoted to showing the newest and most innovative photography. He served as Executive Director of this nonprofit photo center until 1981

During this time, Morey was working on and exhibiting abstract and whimsical black & white nudes. This body of work was well received and garnered several awards, including a Special Jury Prize at the International Triennial of Photography in Friebourg, Switzerland, and First Prize at the California State Exposition. A solo exhibition of Morey’s work was named among the “Best Shows of ’82″ by the San Francisco Bay Guardian. He was also named one of five worldwide “Discoveries” by the editors of Time-Life’s Photography Year 1981.

In 1981, Morey left San Francisco Camerawork to pursue a free-lance photography career. His clients have included magazines such as Architectural Digest, San Francisco Focus, California Magazine, Interview, Newsweek, Cupido, and Penthouse. He also works for corporate clients, including Apple Computer, The Gap, Levi Strauss, Avon, Neutrogena and Wells Fargo Bank.

But it has been Morey’s extensive work with female nudes which has caught the attention of editors, art directors and the general public during the 80′s and 90′s. His classic black & white nudes appeared as a regular feature in Penthouse publications in the U.S., Canada, and Europe. Creative vice-president, Don Myrus, called Morey “the E.J. Bellocq of the 1990′s”.

In addition, a book of selections from his Penthouse assignments, Studio Nudes, was published in the fall of 1992. A second volume, BODY/EXPRESSION/SILENCE, was released in Japan in 1994. Morey’s new collection of nudes, LINEA, has recently been released by Korinsha Press of Kyoto, and is now available.
